You may be surprised to know (most marketing and advertising people are) that in the UK election ads have no content rules at all.
Entropy’s purpose is to maximise trust and accountability in marketing.
Election advertising is certainly in need of some of that too. Our Founder Alex Tait is also the co-founder of a politically neutral, not for profit organisation Reform Political Advertising that is advocating for rules for fact-based claims in election ads. Similar rules to those that exist for commercial advertising.
In the run up to the Australian elections on May 3rd and local and mayoral elections on May 1st Reform Political Advertising put on an event with several MPs in the UK and Australia to discuss the issue of electoral disinformation and to discuss some potential solutions. You can watch the discussion above.
Taking part was:
- Zali Steggall, Australian independent MP, who has introduced two bills to prohibit misleading and deceptive political advertising.
- Ian Lucas, Former Labour MP and Minister 2001-19, Member of Select Committee on Digital, Culture and Media 2015-19 investigation into Disinformation.
- Dr Roz Savage, Liberal Democrat MP for South Cotswolds, was elected to the UK Parliament in 2024 after a career as an English ocean rower, environmental advocate, writer, and speaker.
- Adam Price MS, the Welsh politician and former leader of Plaid Cymru.
- Alex Tait, from Reform Political Advertising which seeks to regulate fact-based claims in electoral advertising.
